Governors Island offers a world apart from New York City, an extraordinary vantage point on New York Harbor and its icons, and the chance to experience the sounds and smells of a green Island surrounded by water. The Governors Island Park and Public Space Master Plan accentuates the special qualities of this unique place, and transforms Governors Island into a destination and landmark. The design delivers new hills with heart-stopping views, an oasis for car-free bicycling, and a sense of play in the elements, experiences and sensations of the new park and public spaces.
Five core principles are the foundation of the Park and Public Space Master Plan:
• Transformation Through Topography
• An Island Like No Other
• Carefree Island
• A Sustainable & Feasible Design
• Ideas From New Yorkers
These principles are rooted in a deep understanding of the Island’s inherent attributes and its potential as a resource for the entire region. And because Governors Island has become a summer playground for New Yorkers over the last several years, the design is informed by an appreciation of how real people experience and enjoy the Island. The principles reflect The Trust for Governors Island’s design imperatives and goals for the project and the collaboration between The Trust and the West 8 Team.
During the 2007 design competition, the West 8 Team sketched an idea for Governors Island’s park and public spaces: create a dramatic vertical landscape on the Island. This idea was based on the notion that in order to transform it…
